Searching for a font, Part II

After my first attempt, I thought it was time for a small visual update on the site.

The previous choice: Ubuntu

The alternative: Adelle Bold by TypeTogether (you can get the font via Font Squirrel)

Current choice: Franchise Bold by Derek Weathersbee (free download, donations accepted)

The last choice also lead to some minor layout changes to fit the sharing buttons better and give more space to the main content area. Runner-ups (also free downloads, considered but not tried): Luxi Sans and Hattori Hanzo.

Your thoughts? :)

The state of my cloud

When I re-started this site, a bit more than 2 months ago, I thought (or so I said to myself) that I would be posting a lot about coding practices, examples, etc.

And it turned out quite differently as you can see on the current status of the tag cloud. Google Plus has been the big news of the last few weeks and it also seems I’m more interested in social media than I thought I was. Or tech news sites mainly post about Google, Facebook, Twitter and Apple.

Bottom line, it is obviously easier for me to shortly comment on stuff rather than to write more thorough posts. Consider this my public commitment to changing this. :)

Trying out the Livefyre commenting system

Since the re-launch of the site I have been looking for a way to make the process of commenting easier. I ended up with a connection to Facebook, keeping the WordPress commenting system, but using Facebook for authentication.

While page views on the site have been slightly over zero, comments have been, well, basically zero :) So I’m trying out a third-part system, Livefyre, with the intention to provide an even easier interface for comments, authentication via other means beyond Facebook and other more advanced features like subscriptions, @ mentions and cross-posting comments to Facebook and Twitter.

So far it looks nice, I like the fact the not only is there an plugin for WordPress, but Livefyre actually integrates with WordPress: previous comments are imported and new comments are also added in the WordPress database. So give it a try and let me know in the comments how it looks :)

Note #1: Cross-posting to Facebook isn’t very sexy as the actual comment is not shown on Facebook but rather a “I posted a comment” message which will not bring many clicks.

(2/9) Note #2: Obviously Livefyre broke the WP-FB Comments plugin and now comments are not shared with the Facebook page. Livefyre has the same functionality although at the moment I can’t put the URL of my page in the Livefyre control panel. The excellent support team of Livefyre have tracked me down though (see comments) so I’m hoping this will be solved soon.

(3/9) Note #3: More resources on WordPress commenting systems and plugins

- Advanced commenting systems for WordPress

Searching for a font

A visual search (using the excellent Simple Lightbox plugin) for the best font for this blog.

Any suggestions are welcome :)

A new start

Greetings, this is a new article starting a third phase of this site. For the sake of… history, the previous two phase included

  • April 2006 – April 2007: Posting photos from my journeys and things poping up in front of me
  • April 2007 – April 2011: Basically a copy from links on the net I was posting through Facebook

In this new incarnation I will be logging my experiences and experiments in web development, hopefully for the benefit of the reader.

Previous versions of the site where built using (own-developed) Apogee Essence CMS. This time I am using WordPress as a testing ground for new ideas.

Enjoy!
